GRP Fibreglass Roofs with a Hard Finish

A fibreglass roof, also known as GRP, is made on the roof itself. Glass matting is laid over prepared boards and soaked with resin, which sets into a rigid layer. A coloured topcoat then goes over the top, giving a hard, jointless surface across the whole roof.

Because the covering is formed in one piece, there are no seams in the main roof area for water to work through. Preformed trims are fixed at the edges and the laminate is carried over them, so the finish runs neatly right to the perimeter. GRP suits roofs that see occasional foot traffic, such as those reached for maintenance.

We lay fibreglass roofs across Inverness, the Great Glen and Fort William. Every job begins with a FREE, no-obligation quote that explains the work in plain terms, the finish you can expect and any boards that need replacing before the laminate is laid.

  • Roof Size

More roof area means more boards, matting, resin and topcoat, plus the time to lay them.

  • Boards Needed

Whether the existing deck can stay or needs new boards has a direct effect on the cost.

  • Trims & Upstands

Long edges and walls meeting the roof need more trims and detailing to finish properly.

  • Shape & Openings

Rooflights, pipes and awkward shapes take longer to laminate around than a plain rectangle.

How It Works

Laying a GRP Roof, Layer by Layer

  1. Step 1

    Boarding the Roof

The old covering is stripped and the deck is checked. Any unsound boards are replaced so the laminate sits on a firm, dry base.

  2. Step 2

    Fitting the Trims

Preformed trims are fixed around the edges and at any upstands, ready for the laminate to be carried over them.

  3. Step 3

    Laying the Laminate

Glass matting is rolled into resin across the whole roof, working out any trapped air so it cures into one solid, even layer.

  4. Step 4

    Topcoat & Review

Once the laminate has cured, the topcoat goes on. We then review the finished roof with you and confirm it is all as agreed.

FAQs

Fibreglass Roof Questions

Straight answers to the questions people ask most often about fibreglass roofs in the Highlands. If yours is not here, call and ask.

What Does GRP Stand For?

GRP stands for glass reinforced plastic. It is resin strengthened with glass matting, which sets hard to form the roof covering.

Can I Walk on a Fibreglass Roof?

A fibreglass roof has a hard surface that copes with occasional foot traffic, such as access for maintenance. It is not designed as a terrace or balcony.

Does a Fibreglass Roof Need Dry Weather to Lay?

Yes. Resin needs dry conditions to cure properly, so fibreglass work is planned around the weather.

Can I Choose the Colour of a Fibreglass Roof?

The topcoat is the coloured layer, so the finish can be chosen to suit your property. We go over the options when we quote.

Why Are Trims Fitted Before the Fibreglass Is Laid?

Fitting the trims first lets the laminate be carried over them, so the edge of the roof is sealed in one with the rest of the covering.
